Learn how to optimize vector storage using plain text to reduce storage overhead while keeping vector search fast and practical In this self-paced course. This course explores how vectors can be represented, stored, and optimized without relying on specialized binary formats. You’ll learn the trade-offs, techniques, and practical patterns for building efficient vector storage systems, with a focus on simplicity, performance, and scalability. Perfect for developers working with embeddings, vector databases, and AI-powered search.

Overview

Almost every team that builds search over their own documents writes the same line without pausing on it:

vector = embed(json.dumps(record))

It looks like the tidy, structured choice. It is one of the most expensive habits in a production retrieval system, and it hides well, because nothing breaks. The bill is just quietly two or three times larger than it needs to be.
An embedding model has no parser. Where your code sees fields, the model sees tokens, and braces and field names cost the same as words while repeating in every record you store.

Working with a product-support knowledge base, you’ll count tokens across four representations of the same records, rewrite the function that turns a record into text, move the remaining fields into metadata columns, and evaluate whether the shorter version still retrieves the right documents.

What You’ll Learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Measure what you are embedding: count tokens and work out how much of a chunk is syntax rather than content.
  • Separate embedded text from metadata: decide which fields users search for in words and which belong in a filterable column.
  • Spot silent truncation: recognise when a wrapper pushes a record past an encoder’s input limit.
  • Model pipeline cost: separate one-off indexing from the recurring cost of chunks pasted into prompts.
  • Evaluate retrieval quality: use recall@1, recall@3 and mean reciprocal rank, and judge which differences matter.
  • Recognise the exceptions: identify where structure belongs in the embedded text, as with code and log data.
Who Should Enroll
  • Developers building RAG systems who want to reduce token spend without changing models.
  • Data scientists and ML engineers new to embeddings and vector databases.
  • Engineers whose retrieval pipeline costs more, or performs worse, than expected.
  • Students who want practice measuring a system rather than trusting its performance.
Why Enroll
Most vector database advice concerns the database: which index, which distance metric, how to shard. This course covers the step before that, the text you hand to the model, usually decided by whichever serialization function was closest to hand. You’ll finish with a formatter you wrote and tested and an evaluation harness that works on data this course has never seen.
What You’ll Need
  • Basic Python knowledge. Familiarity with embeddings helps but is not required.
  • No API key and no vector database. The lab runs end to end offline with a small local model.
All dependencies are pre-configured, and the project runs best on current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
