IBM Bob

This course prepares learners to confidently adopt and responsibly scale IBM Bob v2.0 across the AI Maturity Curve. Start by accelerating everyday editor work where you accept or reject every suggestion, then delegate whole features to Bob under plans you approve before any code is written. Tailor Bob to your codebase, standards, and role so it works like a teammate who already knows your conventions, then scale it to large, long-running work and connect it to the enterprise tools you already run. Ideal for anyone who wants to move from AI-assisted coding to governed, trusted delegation.

AI coding assistants are easy to demo and hard to adopt. The gap isn't capability—it's trust. Teams that hand an agent too much too fast lose track of what's being written and why; teams that never move past autocomplete leave most of the value on the table. IBM Bob v2.0 is built for the space in between: a progression where the developer's authority is designed in at every stage, not bolted on afterward.
This course is designed to take you along that progression, from foundational usage to enterprise-scale delivery. Its four modules trace the AI Maturity Curve—as you shift right along it, you progressively hand Bob more responsibility, with Bob earning that trust by keeping you, the human-in-the-loop, in command the entire way. You'll start by accelerating everyday work in the editor, move to delegating whole features under plans you approve, then teach Bob your codebase and standards, and finish by running it reliably on large, long-running work wired into your enterprise toolchain.

By the end of the course, you'll be able to work fluently with Bob at each stage of the curve, explain where control lives at every step, and carry the message into a C-suite conversation: not "here are some features," but "here is how your teams grow into an AI partner without losing agency to an AI agent."

What You'll Learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Use Bob to accelerate day-to-day development in the editor, accepting or rejecting each suggested change so velocity arrives with near-zero risk.
  • Delegate a complete feature to Bob from idea to working code, reviewing and approving the plan before a single line is written.
  • Tailor Bob to your codebase, coding standards, and team roles so it behaves like a teammate who already knows how you work.
  • Scale Bob to large, long-running work and extend it into the tools your enterprise already runs, governing context, credentials, and tool access along the way.
  • Articulate the AI Maturity Curve as a trust progression that expands capability without surrendering developer control.

Course Overview

Module 1: Assist Put Bob to work in the editor on the tasks you already do every day. Generate, refactor, and explain code with Bob alongside you, accepting or rejecting every change keystroke by keystroke. Establish the baseline of the curve: immediate velocity, with control regulated at the level of each individual suggestion.
Module 2: Delegate Move from suggestions to outcomes by handing Bob a whole feature. Have Bob take an idea from plan to working code, building only what you've reviewed and approved first. Practice the approval gate that defines this stage—control maintained through the plan, before any AI-generated code exists.
Module 3: Tailor Teach Bob the context that makes it useful on your team, not just any team. Encode the rules Bob must adhere to, so your codebase conventions and standards are enforced rather than suggested. Adapt Bob's behavior to different roles so each teammate gets an assistant that already understands their work.
Module 4: Scale & Extend Keep Bob reliable when the work gets large, long-running, and shared. Connect Bob to the tools and systems your enterprise already runs. Govern context, credentials, and tool access—the form control takes once Bob is operating at scale.

Course prerequisites

All you need is working familiarity with a modern development environment and a desire to learn how to build alongside an AI partner. The modules are hands-on, so access to an environment where you can run Bob is recommended to complete the exercises.
