Build a Sentiment Analyzer with a Pre-Trained AI Model

Use a real pre-trained AI model to instantly tell whether any piece of text is positive or negative, no coding experience with machine learning, no training data, and no GPU required. In under 30 minutes, you'll load a model with a few lines of Python, read its confidence scores, and test it on your own text.

Use a real pre-trained AI model to instantly tell whether any piece of text is positive or negative, no coding experience with machine learning, no training data, and no GPU required. In under 30 minutes, you'll load a model with a few lines of Python, read its confidence scores, and test it on your own text.

Understanding whether text expresses a positive or negative opinion is one of the most widely used applications of AI today, powering everything from product review analysis to social media monitoring to customer support triage. The good news: you don't need to be a machine learning expert, have a dataset, or own a GPU to use this technology yourself. In this project, you'll load a model that's already been trained by researchers and put it to work in just a few lines of Python.

A Look at the Project Ahead

You'll start by loading a ready-made sentiment analysis model through Hugging Face's pipeline function, run it on a single piece of text, then scale up to processing a whole batch of reviews at once. Along the way, you'll learn to read a model's confidence score and see firsthand where these models succeed, and where they struggle. By the end, you'll be able to:
  • Use a pre-trained AI model to classify the sentiment of text as positive or negative
  • Interpret a model's confidence score for its predictions
  • Apply the model to your own custom text
  • Compare results across two different pre-trained models

What You'll Need

Basic familiarity with Python is helpful (calling functions, reading simple output), but no prior AI or machine learning experience is required. Everything runs inside the Skills Network Labs JupyterLab environment directly in your browser, there's nothing to download or install on your own computer. The lab does install a couple of required Python libraries (transformers, torch) partway through, this happens automatically in the notebook itself, you just need to run the provided cell and wait a minute or two. As with all Skills Network labs, this works best on a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.
