About This Course
IBM’s BDU, Virtual High School and Toronto-based start up Fireside Analytics Inc. have partnered to create a Data Science course for Grade 12 level high school learners.
The course uses real-life case studies to combine 3 disciplines: Business Studies, Computer Programming, and Statistics to teach data science skills that are highly sought after in today’s digital world. Technical components are taught through IBM's free technical learning platform, Data Scientist Workbench. Data Scientist Workbench is a cloud-hosted collection of open source tools such as OpenRefine, Jupyter Notebooks, Zeppelin Notebooks, and RStudio. Learners can register online at any time. Once enrolled, students will have access to a range of free data science tools, available through their browser. With increasing global internet connectivity that means users from Argentina to Zambia, in big city classrooms or rural internet cafés, can start learning Spark, Hadoop, Python, R and Scala at bigdatauniversity.com, for free (and no more version control issues for teachers!).
Students are also given access to state of the art analytics and machine learning tools such as IBM’s Watson Analytics and supplementary materials are available for free at BDU.

Case Study #1:
You are a human resources professional recruiting a new staff member, how can data help you determine their salary?
Case Study #2:
You have received over 1000 resumes for the job you are hiring for, how can you use data science to efficiently shortlist the candidates? You will use text mining techniques to pick out key words from the pile of resumes.
Case Study #3:
Students are dropping out of the high school music program unexpectedly. What is causing students to churn (drop out) and what can you do about it?
Case Study #4:
The minister of International Trade has hired you to provide insight into Canada’s trade with China and the EU after Brexit. What is Brexit and how can you visualize trade data in a compelling way?
Drake and Justin Bieber are often associated with the city of Toronto. How can tweets help us to understand if the brand association is good for the city? How can you visualize sentiment in a compelling way?
Final Capstone Project
In the final capstone project, you will explore data journalism and find ways to use data as a force for social good. You will gain experience working with artificial intelligence using Watson Analytics to address United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Data Science Careers
In an increasingly digital world, employers in arts, science and, business fields are looking for candidates with data science skills. The IDC4U Data Science course puts learners on the pathway towards careers in data science where the growing demand for these skills is greater than supply.
The average salary for experienced data scientists is ~USD $130 000 per year.
