Apache Spark – Hands-on Session
Apache Spark has become one of the fastest growing and most exciting open source projects in history, built upon the promise of a fast and general engine for large scale big data processing. With libraries in many of the most common programming languages used by data scientists (Python, R, Java, Scala), Spark promises unmatched approachability. However, its true prowess lies in its power. Spark in unbelievably fast, in some cases processing up to 10x the amount of data with only 1/4 the amount of hardware versus existing technology (source).
Come join speakers Matt McInnis and Sepi Seifzadeh, Data Scientists from IBM Canada as they guide the group through three hands-on exercises using IBM’s new Data Science Experience to leverage Apache Spark! By the end of the session we will have learned the basic concepts of Apache Spark, written a ‘Hello World’ application, and a machine learning algorithm. Should be a great time!

Thank you to Lighthouse Labs for providing the space for our meetup this week.
The BDU Ambassador Program is an initiative that started in July 2015 with the objective to speed up the dissemination of Data Science, Big Data, and Analytic skills using BDU content. From an ambassador’s perspective, it’s a way to jump start their offerings on these hot areas.
Lighthouse Labs community of mentors consists of over 80 developers. Currently hiring. You can check out the full list of postings and apply here.
